Bookin’ It @ the Drake, a bi-monthly book discussion that meets at Drake Community Library, will hold its next meeting on Thursday, September 14th at 7 p.m. The selection to be discussed is “Taìno” by Jose Barreiro.
“Taìno” takes readers on an unforgettable voyage through the eyes of Diego Colon, a Taìno native who acted as an interpreter for Columbus and was adopted by him. The novel delves into the complexities of Columbus’ encounters, exposing both his admirable certainty of signals from the elements and his destructive arrogance in renaming the world. The story unfolds as Diego pens a memoir, reflecting on the Spanish arrival in the New World, casting light on a perspective rarely explored in historical narratives.
The book group is open to the public and chooses both non-fiction and fiction titles to discuss. Drake Community Library purchases several copies of each title for general circulation.
Book discussions are held on the second Thursday every other month. The title chosen for November 9th is “Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett. The book delves into the lives of twin sisters whose paths diverge dramatically, one choosing to live as a Black woman and the other passing as white. Bennett’s insightful exploration of identity, family, and societal constructs offers readers a rich and immersive reading experience. New readers are always welcome to Bookin’ It @ the Drake.
